[영작표현#31] on the weekend/at the weekend 주말에

 

많이 쓰는 표현이면서도 실수하기 쉬운 표현을 이번 강좌에서 알아 보겠습니다. "주말에"라고 말하고 싶은데 어떻게 써야 좋을까요?

 

보통 주말이라고 하면 Saturday & Sunday를 말합니다. 간혹 Friday 저녁부터를 말하는 경우도 있지만 일반적이진 않습니다. 

 

"주말에"라는 표현은 "일회성"인지 "반복적"인지에 따라 그리고 "미국식"인지 "영국식"인지에 따라 차이가 있습니다.

 

 

일회성인 경우

▶ 미국식: on the weekend

▶ 영국식: at the weekend

 

We went to the park on the weekend. (미국식)
We went to the park at the weekend. (영국식)

 

 

반복적인 경우

▶ 미국식: on weekends

▶ 영국식: at weekends

 

"나는 주말에 교회에 가"
I go to church on weekends. (미국식)
I go to church at weekends. (영국식)

 

"나는 주말에 일하지 않지"
I don't work on weekends. (미국식)
I don't work at weekends. (영국식)

★ teach school = to teach or to be a teacher in a school "가르치다" 또는 "선생님이다"

★ 위 문장에 쓰인 on weekends는 반복적이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

 

 

"주말에"의 또 다른 표현

▶ during the weekend

▶ over the weekend

 

위 두가지도 쓸 수 있으며 의미는 별 차이 없습니다.

 

"주말에 불꽃놀이가 열렸다."
The fireworks took place over the weekend.
The fireworks took place during the weekend.

 

 

this/next/last+weekend 표현

this/next/last+weekend는 부사구이기 때문에 at/on 등 전치사를 붙이지 않고 씁니다.

 

I went to his wedding last weekend. 
나는 지난 주말에 그의 결혼식에 갔다.

 

We are going on a field trip next weekend.
우리는 다음주에 필드트립 갈거야.
