[영작표현#34] Shed light on ~을 분명히/명확히 하다

 

Shed light on/upon = clarify, explain

위 표현은 formal하게 쓸 수 있는 표현으로 "~을 분명히 하다, ~을 명확히 하다, ~을 설명/해명하다, ~을 조명하다"의 의미로 사용할 수 있습니다.

 

"shed light upon"과 "shed light on"과의 차이는 formal과 less formal에 있습니다.

 

upon은 주로 formal에 쓰이고, on은 주로 informal에 쓰입니다. Formal English는 격식 갖춘 writing할 때 쓰지만 Informal English는 Speaking이나 격식 갖추지 않은 writing에서 자주 쓰입니다. 따라서 on이 upon보다 훨씬 많이 쓰입니다.
