[뉴스영어#16] 이건희 회장 별세-New York Times 신문 기사

 

 

 

요즘 며칠 동안 큰 이슈가 되고 있는 사건이 있다면 아마도 이건희회장 별세인 것 같습니다.

 

 

78세라면 딱 성경말씀이 생각 나는데요,  

"우리의 년수가 칠십이요 강건하면 팔십이라도 그 년수의 자랑은 수고와 슬픔 뿐이요 신속히 가니 우리가 날아가나이다" (시편 90:10)

"Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away." (Psalm 90:10, NIV)

 

 

이 회장은 일단 성경에서 언급한 인간의 수명의 적절한 년수는 채운 것 같아 보이지만 대한민국 제1의 부자이면서 한국 제일의 병원을 소유했음에도 불구하고 수명은 인간 마음대로 되지 않는 것이 진리인 것 같습니다.

 

 

어쨋든 이건희 회장의 별세는 해외에서도 큰 뉴스가 되고 있는데요, 미국 대표 신문인 New York Times 기사를 가져와 봤습니다.

 

 

이 기사를 쓴 뉴욕타임즈 기자의 이름을 보니 중국계인것 같습니다.  그래서 그런건지 전반적으로 어려운 영어 단어를 쓰지 않아서 읽으시는데 많이 어렵지 않을 것입니다.

Mr. Lee was convicted — and pardoned — twice for white-collar crimes, in a sign of the ills in South Korea’s relationship with its business dynasties.

이회장은 화이트칼라 범죄로 두번이나 유죄판결을 받고 사면 되었는데, 이는 한국의 기업 왕국과 관계에 있어 병폐를 나타내는 징조였다.

He was 78.

삼성을 스마트폰, 텔레비전, 컴퓨터 칩으로 세계적인 거물로 만들었지만 유죄판결을 받은 이건희 회장은 두 번이나 유죄판결을 받았으며, 한국에서 전형적인 패턴으로, 도중에 자행된 화이트칼라 범죄로 두번 사면된 바 있으며 지난 일요일 한국의 수도인 서울에서 별세했다. 그는 78세 였다.

Samsung announced the death but did not specify the cause. Mr. Lee had been incapacitated since a heart attack in 2014.

삼성은 사망 사실을 발표했지만 구체적인 원인은 밝히지 않았다. 이회장은 2014년 심장마비 이후 무력한 상태였다.

Lee Kun-hee pushed the company relentlessly up the technological ladder. By the early 1990s, Samsung had surpassed Japanese and American rivals to become a pacesetter in memory chips. It came to dominate flat-panel displays as screens lost their bulk. And it conquered the middle-to-high end of the mobile market as cellphones became powerhouse computing devices in the 2000s.

이건희 회장은 기술 사다리를 끈질기게 밀어 올렸다. 1990년대 초까지 삼성은 일본과 미국의 경쟁사를 제치고 메모리 반도체 분야의 주도자가 되었다. 스크린이 대량으로 사라지면서 평면 디스플레이를 장악하게 됐다. 그리고 2000년대 들어 휴대전화가 강력한 컴퓨터 기기가 되면서 모바일 시장의 중상위권을 장악했다.

Mr. Lee — who was chairman of Samsung Group from 1987 to 1998, chairman and chief executive of Samsung Electronics from 1998 to 2008, then Samsung Electronics chairman from 2010 until his death — was South Korea’s richest man.

삼성전자는 오늘날 한국 경제의 주춧돌이자 연구개발(R&D)에 대한 세계 최고의 기업 지출원 중 한 명이다. 1987년부터 1998년까지 삼성그룹 회장, 1998년부터 2008년까지 삼성전자 회장 겸 사장, 2010년부터 사망할 때까지 삼성전자 회장을 지낸 이씨는 한국 최고 부자였다.

He and his family members used a web of ownership arrangements to exert influence over the other companies under the Samsung umbrella. Over the course of his tenure, even as professional managers came to have more responsibility at the group, Mr. Lee remained Samsung’s big thinker, the provider of grand strategic direction.
