Branch-trimming(구조정리) 방법

 

 

“Branches-Trimming”(BT)은 문장의 "부속성분”을 제거시키고 "필수성분"만 남기는 훈련입니다. 문장구조를 단순하게 정리하기 때문에 "구조정리"라고 할 수 있습니다. 

 

BT는 문장의 부속성분인 “부사계열”과 “형용사계열”을 찾아서 제거시키고, “필수성분”만 남기는 훈련입니다. 참고로 CO는 Conjunction의 약자로 접속사를 의미합니다.

 

BT를 하면 아무리 긴 문장이라도 단순해 보이기 때문에, Reading할 때 좋으며, SAT의 Writing 섹션 풀때 주어+동사 수일치 답이 한 눈에 보이며, Writing 할 때 필수성분에 제거했던 부속성분을 얹어 주면 훌륭한 문장이 되기 때문에 아주 좋은 영어 공부 훈련 방법입니다.

구조분석: 분사구문 placed는 pp로 a plant를 수식하는 부속성분이므로 제거. P+N은 부속성분이므로 제거

   (도시에 사는 동물은 인간보다 빠르게 적응합니다.)

 

BT: Animals living in cities are adapting faster than humans.

구조분석: 분사구문 ing+P+N은 부속성분이므로 제거. P+N 부속성분 제거.

 

3) Going through the shed door one morning, Kit halted.

   (어느 날 아침 창고 문을 지나가던 키트는 멈춰섰다.)

 

BT: Going through the shed door one morning, Kit halted.

       ing       P              N              Adv         S    V 

구조분석: 분사구문 ing+P+N은 부속성분이므로 제거. 

 

 

 

4) Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food.

   (광합성은 식물이 음식을 만드는 과정입니다.)

 

BT: Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food.

               S         V        C       P    CO      S       V     O

구조분석: 관계대명사(P+CO S+V)는 부속성분이므로 제거하면 S+V+C만 남는 문장

 

 

 

5) Lava that hardens more slowly forms rocks with tiny mineral crystals in them.

   (더 천천히 굳어지는 용암은 그 안에 작은 광물 결정이 있는 암석을 형성합니다.)

 

BT: Lava that hardens more slowly forms rocks with tiny mineral crystals in them.

구조분석: CO V는 관계대명사, 부속성분이므로 제거. 결국 S+V+O만 남는 문장

 

6) Using a special electron microscope, scientists can photograph the shadows of molecules.

   (과학자들은 특수 전자 현미경을 사용하여, 분자의 그림자를 촬영할 수 있습니다.)

 

BT: Using a special electron microscope, scientists can photograph the shadows of molecules.

구조분석: 분사구문 ing+N과 P+N은 부속성분이므로 제거. S+V+O만 남는 문장 

 

7) Humus is formed when roots, plants, and the dead bodies of small animals decay.

   (허머스는 뿌리, 식물 및 작은 동물의 사체가 부패 할 때 형성됩니다.)

 

BT: Humus is formed when roots, plants, and the dead bodies of small animals decay.

         S      V           CO                      S                          P           N        V

구조분석: 부사절(CO S+V)은 부속성분이므로 제거. 결국 S+V+C의 문장

 

8) Aptitude tests can predict students' abilities to learn certain skills.

   (적성검사는 학생들의 특정 기술 습득 능력을 예측할 수 있습니다.)

 

BT: Aptitude tests can predict students' abilities to learn certain skills.

              S            V                   O            to-ⓥ

구조분석: to-ⓥ는 앞의 명사 abilities를 수식하므로 부속성분. 제거하면 S+V+O의 문장

 

 

 

SAT 기출문제 

 

Branch-Trimming 만으로 아주 간단히 SAT Writing Section 수일치 문제를 풀 수 있습니다.

 

2018-05-USA 기출문제

위 문장을 Branch-Trimming 해 보면 다음과 같습니다.

→ the combination allow performers' voices 

                S           V            O

긴 문장이 이렇게 S+V+O만 남는 깔끔한 문장이 되죠. S와 V의 수가 일치되지 않는 것이 금방 보입니다. 답은 당연히 D)가 되겠네요. 

 

이처럼 Branch-Trimming은 복잡한 문장도 단순히 만들어 버리는 효과를 가집니다. SAT를 저에게 배우는 학생들은 문제풀 때 Branch-Trimming한 부분을 아예 읽지도 않습니다. 그만큼 문제 푸는 속도가 빨라지고 정확도는 높아지게 됩니다.

정리해 보면 The rapid proliferation are attributable의 문장이 됩니다. S+V+C만 있는 간단한 문장인데 주어가 단수인데 동사가 are로 나와 있습니다. 따라서 정답은 C)임이 금방 보이죠. 이게 바로 Branch-Trimming의 파워입니다.
