이번 강좌는 관계대명사(Relative Pronoun)의 "수량표현(number/quantity)"입니다.

 

▶ 선행사가 사물일 때: # of which ▶ 선행사가 사람일 때: # of whom

 

먼저 선행사가 사물인 문장을 보겠습니다.

George Orwell wrote six novels, and some of them are still popular.

조지오웰은 6권의 소설을 썼고, 그 중 몇개는 아직도 인기가 있다.

→ George Orwell wrote six novels, and some of them are still popular.

them은 novels를 가르키고 사물이므로 관계사+대명사(관계대명사) 역할을 하는 which로 대체해 줍니다.

→ George Orwell wrote six novels, some of which are still popular.

이렇게 쓰면 더 고급스러운 문장이 됩니다.

→ George Orwell wrote six novels, all of which are still popular.

이 때 동사는 one에 일치시키기 때문에 단수로 씁니다.

→ George Orwell wrote six novels, one of which is still popular.

이제 선행사가 사람인 경우를 살펴 보겠습니다.

김선생님은 많은 학생들을 가르쳤는데 그 중 몇명은 지금 과학자이다.

선행사가 사람이므로 them을 whom으로 씁니다.

→ Mr. Kim taught many students, some of whom are scientists now.

→ Mr. Kim taught many students, all of whom are scientists now.

one of 의 동사는 one에 일치시킵니다.
