[영작리딩#1] history reading + ~ing(현재) 분사구문 영작

In 1805, United States President Thomas Jefferson received a shipment that he had been eagerly anticipating. It included four boxes, two trunks, and three cages. 1) Inside these containers were hundreds of items that explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark had collected during their exploration of the nation’s westernmost territories. 2) Opening the containers, Jefferson found such items as pressed plants, soil, bones, and even live animals. 1805년에, 미국 대통령 토마스 제퍼슨은 간절히 고대하고 있었던 배송물품을 받았다. 그 배송품에는 4개의 박스, 두개의 트렁크, 그리고 3개의 새장이 있었다. 이 컨테이너에는 메리웨더 루이스와 윌리엄 클락이 서부 지역을 탐험하는 동안 수집하였던 수 많은 물품들이 들어 있었다. 그 컨테이너를 열었을 때, 제퍼슨은 압축된 식물, 흙, 뼈, 그리고 심지어 살아 있는 동물들과 같은 품목들을 발견하였다.

 

단어정리

표현정리

 

1)  Inside these containers were hundreds of items that explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark had collected during their exploration of the nation’s westernmost territories.

 

영작에 이용하기 좋게 약간 변형해 보겠습니다.

→ Inside these containers / were / hundreds of items / that they had collected / during their exploration.

"이 컨테이너 안에(P+N) / 있었다(V) / 많은 물품들이(S) / 그들이 수집했었던(that/which S+V) / 탐험하는 동안(P+N)

 

주의사항 1: 위 문장은 도치문장(Inversion)입니다. "도치문장"은 강조하고자 할 때 또는 위 본문 글처럼 앞 문장 내용 흐름을 끊지 않고 싶을 때 사용합니다.

 

주의사항 2: 과거+과거이전 시간 표현. 위 문장은 두 가지의 서로 다른 시간대가 나와 있어서 나중에 발생한 사건은 과거(were)로 먼저 발생한 사건은 과거이전(had pp)으로 표현한 것을 기억해 주세요!

 

 

2) Opening the containers, Jefferson found such items as pressed plants, soil, bones, and even live animals.

 

위 문장도 영작을 위하여 변형해 보겠습니다.

→ Opening the containers, / Jefferson found / such items as soil and bones.

"그 용기를 열었을 때(~ing) / 제퍼슨은 발견했다(S+V) / 흙과 뼈와 같은 물품을(O)"

 

주의사항: 분사구문의 주어는 문장의 주어와 같습니다. 따라서 Open하는 주어를 주절의 주어(Jefferson)와 일치시키는 것이 Writing할 때 아주 중요한 포인트입니다. 주어가 일치되지 않으면 틀린 문장이 됩니다.

 

분사구문 이전의 문장으로 변형: 부사절 접속사를 넣고, 동사의 시제는 주절 시제와 일치 

→ 문맥 흐름상 when이나 as soon as를 쓰면 적당할 것 같습니다.
