[단어어원#26] homo 어원

 

 

 

homo는 그리이스어 homos 어원을 가지며  the same 또는 like라는 뜻입니다. 즉, "같은" 또는 "비슷한"의 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

 

 

1. homogeneous: homo(=the same) + gene(=race, give birth) + ous(=adjective suffix) adj. similar, uniform 동종의, 비슷한

 

homogeneous는 "같은(homo) 종(gene)의" 의미이므로 동종의 또는 비슷한 의미로 쓰입니다.

 

 

2. homonym: homo(=the same) + onym(=name) n. a word pronounced or spelled the same but different in meaning 동음(동철) 이의어

 

homonym은 발음이나 철자(onym)가 같지만(homo), 의미는 다른 단어이기 때문에 동음(동철) 이의어라고 합니다.

 

 

3. homophone: homo(=the same) + phone(=sound) n. 동음이의어

 

homonym과 의미가 비슷한 단어이지만 다른 점은 homophone은 발음(phone)만 같고(homo), 의미가 다른( 단어로 보면 됩니다.  

 

4. homogamy: homo(=the same) + gamy(=marriage) n. the state of bearing flowers that do not differ sexually 동형교배, 동형 배우자 생식(식물)

 

homo는 같은이란 의미이고 gamy는 결혼이란 뜻이기 때문에 문자 그대로 암수가 같은 것끼리 교배한다는 의미가 되지만, 식물에서는 암수 구별이 안되는 꼿을 피우는 상태입니다. 이 복잡한 말은 동형교배 또는 동형 배우자 생식이라 부릅니다. 

 

 

5. homophobic: homo(=the same) + phobic(=excessive fear) + ic(=adjective suffix) adj. fearing or hating homosexuals 동성애 공포증의/혐오하는

 

homo는 동성연애자를 뜻하며, phobic은 혐오하는 의미로 homophobic은 동성애를 혐오하는 또는 동성애 공포증의 의미로 쓰입니다. phobia는 혐오자입니다.

7. homosexual: homo(=the same) + sexual(=involving sexes) adj. attracted sexually to people of the same sex 동성애의, n. 동성애자
