1. Adverb Clause(부사절) 축약
규칙 1: "동일시점 부사절"(while/when/as)과 "이유 부사절"(because/since/as)은 접속사 생략 가능
While he attended college, James joined the debate team.
→ While attending college, James joined the debate team.
→ Attending college, James joined the debate team.
When/As they were shocked by the earthquake, Haitians tried to escape from the scene.
→ When shocked by the earthquake, Haitians tried to escape from the scene.
→ Shocked by the earthquake, Haitians tried to escape from the scene.
Since/Because/As he has an important test next week, Paul is studying hard.
→ Having an important test next week, Paul is studying hard.
As soon as(~하자마자)는 upon 또는 on으로 바꾸어 분사구문을 만듭니다.
As soon as he graduated from college, Paul went back to his country.
→ Upon/On graduating from college, Paul went back to his country.
[대학을 졸업하자마자 폴은 본국으로 돌아 갔다]
★ Upon/On은 전치사(Preposition)으로 같은 뜻이지만, Upon은 formal writing에 On은 informal하게 자주 쓰입니다.

While doing so, they made a surprising discovery. (Time for Kids)
생물학자 팀은 최근 에콰도르 북부의 열대 우림에 사는 개구리를 연구했다. 연구하는 동안, 그들은 놀라운 발견을 했다.
규칙2: 시간 접속사 중에서 "before/after/since"와 대조(though/although/while) 접속사는 제거하지 않습니다.
☆ 위 접속사들을 생략하면 의미가 불명확해 지기 때문입니다.
After he graduated from college, Mike moved to Canada in search of new opportunities.
→ After graduating from college, Mike moved to Canada in search of new opportunities.
→ Graduating from college, Mike moved to Canada in search of new opportunities. (X)
위 문장처럼 after를 생략한다면 분사구문을 읽을 때 Graduating이 어떤 의미로 느껴 지시나요?
대학을 졸업할 때, 하기전, 한 후? 혼동만 가중시킬 뿐입니다. 따라서 after를 생략해 주면 안됩니다.
★ 만약 After를 생략해 주고 싶다면 아래 "규칙3"을 꼭 보시기 바랍니다.
Although Mark was rich, he didn't spend much.
→ Although rich, Mark didn't spend much.
★ be동사는 제거합니다.
Although Mark was a rich heir, he didn't spend much.
→ Although a rich heir, Mark didn't spend much.
★ be동사는 제거합니다.
규칙3: "부사절"과 "주절" 동사의 "시제"가 다를 때
▶ 원문에 부사절과 주절의 시제가 다를 경우, 부사절의 동사를 위의 규칙과 같이 축약해 주면 됩니다.
When he had travelled all over the country, Peter rented a cottage to live in.
→ When having travelled all over the country, Peter rented a cottage to live in. (O)
→ Having travelled all over the country, Peter rented a cottage to live in. (O)
▶ 분사구문 having+pp를 부사절로 환원시키려면, 부사절 ①주어는 주절의 주어로, ②동사는 having을 had로 고치면 됩니다.
Having travelled all over the country, Peter rented a cottage to live in.
→ When he had travelled all over the country, Peter rented a cottage to live in.
▶ after를 생략해 주려면 "Having+pp"로 써야 합니다.
After he graduated from college, Mike moved to Canada in search of new opportunities.
→ After graduating from college, Mike moved to Canada in search of new opportunities.
→ Having graduated from college, Mike moved to Canada in search of new opportunities.
★ 위 문장의 시제는 Having graduated(과거이전)가 moved(과거)보다 먼저 발생한 것입니다.
Having+pp를 쓰지 않고 after를 생략해 주면 동일 시간에 발생한 걸로 착각하기 때문에 반드시 Having+pp의 형태로 써야 합니다.
규칙4: 부사절과 주절의 주어가 다르면 주어를 제거하지 않습니다.
▶ 주절과 부사절 주어가 다를 때 분사구문에서 주어를 생략하면 서로 다른 의미가 됩니다.
When doctors prescribe drugs, pharmacists fill the prescriptions.
[의사가 약을 처방을 하면, 약사는 조제를 합니다]
→ When prescribing drugs, pharmacists fill the prescriptions. (X)
[약사가 약을 처방하고 조제합니다]
▶ 주어가 다르면 축약하지 않는 것이 좋지만 분사구문을 꼭 써야 한다면 주어는 남겨 둡니다.
이런 구조를 "Absolute Phrase"(독립분사구문)이라고 부릅니다.

→ When my car had made a noise, I stopped driving.

→ If the weather permits, we will go on a picnic.

2. Adjective Clause(형용사절) 축약
Noun which/that/who V
→ Noun V+ing/pp
① 일반동사 축약: 동사 원형에 ~ing를 붙입니다.
② be 동사 축약: be 동사를 제거합니다. (be+~ing인 경우도 be를 제거합니다)
