캐나다, 미국 등 서양에서는 사람의 이름을 따서 건물, 도로, 학교 이름 등을 짓는 경우가 많이 있습니다.

 

이런 경우에 "누구의 이름을 따서 이름 짓다"라는 표현으로 "be named after"를 사용할 수 있습니다. 

 

 

Sir Frederic Banting Secondary School is named after Sir Frederic Banting. 

Sir Frederic Banting Secondary School은 Sir Frederic Banting의 이름을 따서 명명했다.

 

District of Columbia(DC) is named after Columbus.

와싱튼 DC는 컬럼버스의 이름을 따라 지었다.

 

The Streisand Effect is named after the actress Barbara Streisand.

스트라이젠드 효과는 여배우 바바라 스트라이젠드를 따서 명명한 것이다.

 

This province was named after Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. 

이 주는 빅토리아 여왕의 넷째 딸 루이즈 캐롤라인 알버타 공주의 이름을 따서 지어졌다.

 

California was named after a fictional island for black Amazon-like warrior women, ruled by Queen Calafia.

Bluetooth was named after a tenth-century king, Harald Bluetooth, King of Denmark and Norway.

블루투스는 10세기 덴마크와 노르웨이 왕이었던 하랄드 블루투스의 이름을 따서 지어졌다.
