[영작표현#53] only to do ~하나 결과는 ~하다

 

 

 

알고 있으면 아주 유용한 표현 "only to do"를 알아 보겠습니다.

 

"only to do"는 결과를 나타내는 to부정사로 부사역할을 합니다. 

 

그럼 언제 이 표현을 사용할까요?

 

"only to do" 뒤에 오는 사건이 "실망스럽거나", "기분 좋지 않거나", "놀랄만한" 일에 사용합니다.  

 

주의할 것은 해석할 때, 결과적으로 해석해야 된다는 것입니다. "~했으나 결과는 ~하다"의 의미입니다. 

 

 

Some people arrived only to discover that finding parking was difficult.

사람들은 도착해 보니 주차장 찾기가 어렵다는 것을 알게 되었다.

 

The police pulled over a swerving motorist only to find that he had two pigs sitting in his lap.

경찰이 곡예 운전하는 차를 세웠으나 운전자가 두 마리의 돼지를 무릎에 앉혀 놓고 있다는 것을 알았다.

 

I opened the package, only to discover that some parts were missing.

나는 그 소포를 열었지만 부속 몇가지가 없어졌다는 것을 알았다.
