[영작표현#56] a lot of/lots of만 쓰시나요? "많은" 고급 표현 정리

 

 

한번은 꼭 정리하고 넘어가려 했던 표현인데 오늘이 바로 그날인것 같습니다.

 

학생들이 writing할 때 "많은"이란 표현을 lots of나 a lot of를 쓰는 것을 많이 봤습니다. 그리고 한 writing에서 같은 표현을 계속 반복적으로 쓰는 것은 보게 됩니다.

 

a lot of나 lots of가 많이 쓰이는 표현이긴 하지만 "informal"한 표현이기 때문에 essay 쓸 때 자주 등장하면 좋지 않겠지요.

 

그래서 오늘은 가장 많이 사용하기도 하지만 가장 많이 실수하기도 하는 표현 "많은"의 동의어를 가져 왔습니다. 한 writing에 "많은"이란 표현을 여러번 사용해야 된다면 여기 표현들을 다양하게 활용해 보세요.

many는 의문문이나 부정문에 써야 어울립니다. 평서문에서는 아주 formal한 느낌을 줍니다.

a myriad of

The company faces a myriad of problems.

The university offers a wide variety of programs.

셀 수 없는 명사 앞에 사용할 수 있는 표현

 

much

much도 many와 같이 의문문이나 부정문에 써야 어울립니다. 평서문에서는 아주 formal한 느낌을 줍니다.

He doesn't make much money.

a great/large/fair amount of

There is a large amount of information available to help.

 

a good/great deal of

Words hold a great deal of power.

 

a large/great quantity of 

A large quantity of clothing was stolen from the store.

 

a wealth of

He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our council. 

an abundance of

There is an abundance of food at the party.

 

 

Informal에 사용할 수 있는 표현

토플이나 IELTS Writing은 Semi-formal이기 때문에 아래 표현을 써도 문제는 없지만, formal writing에서는 쓰지 않는 것이 좋습니다. 아래 표현들은 informal 표현(speaking에서, 친구들이나 가까운 관계의 사람들 사이의 writing에서)에 사용하는 것이 좋습니다.

plenty of

I've got plenty of time today.

 

tons of
