[영작표현#91] by someone's/something's standards "~의 기준으로 볼 때"

 

 

"누구/무엇의 기준으로 볼 때"라는 표현을 써야할 때가 종종 있습니다.

 

위의 표현을 모르면 쓰기 힘든 표현인데, 어떻게 쓰이는지 살펴 보겠습니다.

 

 

쓰이는 구조는 문맥에 따라 "사람의 기준으로 본다면"은 "by someone's standards"로, "사물의 기준으로 본다면"으로 쓰려면 "by something's standards"로 씁니다.

 

주의할 것은 두 경우 다 "standards"에 "s"를 꼭 붙여서 씁니다.

어떤 기준으로도: by any standard(s) 

 

약간 변형한다면 someone's 또는 something's 대신 any를 써서 "어떤 기준으로도"라는 의미로 쓸 수있습니다.

 

 

그 건물은 어떤 기준으로도 봐도 웅장한 건축의 걸작입니다.

The building is a majestic architectural masterpiece by any standards. 

 

-majestic = 웅장한

 

-architectural = 건축의

 

-masterpiece = 걸작

 

 

 

그는 어떤 기준으로 보아도 놀라운 경력을 가지고 있었습니다.

He had an astonishing career by any standards.

-astonishing = 놀라운
